Quiet Moments With Becky

It’s the rainy season now in Thailand and there is one thing I have always wondered…

When walking down the road with an umbrella who has the right of way?

Is the taller person supposed to go up and the small person supposed to hunch down? But if everyone is the same height who goes where!?

Sparkles: More Than Just Bling

Who doesn’t love a little Sparkle in their life? I know I do especially when it’s jewelry but now I have an entirely new desire when I think of adding some sparkle to my everyday!

The other day I had the most amazing experience! I was invited to Sparkles, the most chic bakery in Bangkok frequented by Thai celebrities, foreign dignitaries, expats and locals, for a tasting and an interview with Sophie Promarin, the owner of this amazing cupcakery. Sophie, a Thai American, born and raised in California has had a passion for food that started with her mother’s delicious Thai cooking as a child and developed even further during her travels around the world. She has not only developed a passion and a love for good food but more importantly the flavors and how to work with them.

Quiet Moments with Becky & Chris

having a quiet moment

having a quiet moment

I am starting a new series on the blog called “Quiet Moments with Becky & Chris”

Being an expat you can’t help but have some questions about life in whatever country you are residing in.  Somehow Chris and I come up with the most random questions, some are silly but some are legitimate questions that we would like to know the answers to!  So if you read these and it makes you smile- mission accomplished!  If you read these and it makes you think-that’s a double whammy!  If you read our quiet moments and actually know the answers please enlighten us!

If you are an expat or a traveler with a quiet moment of your own please share!  I would love to post it and give you the bragging rights and in return you might make someone smile, think or finally get the answer you were looking for!

Here we go!  This is a Becky Quiet Moment:

“If you have a pop singing group full of ladyboys are they a boy band or a girl group?”

Thursday Market on Soi 23

In a previous post, I shared with you my awesome finds from the Thursday morning market on Soi 23.  This market, also known as the Asoke Market or Japanese Market, has anything you might possibly want or need! Today Killian and I ventured out to the market with our new friends (Loren also writes a blog on her adventures in Bangkok- check it out- great stuff for expats with kids!).  Loren and her son were on a mission for toys and we had no other purpose there today but to take pictures with the Nikon so I can flex my photography muscles.

Enjoy!

Soi 33

Just a morning stroll down our local brothel street, soi 33. Guess it’s to early to be wooing a lovely lady.

Wanted to give you a look of what I was talking about in a previous post, here you can see “massage parlors” with names like love teen massage and lookie lookie. No brothel would be complete without a Moulin Rouge. Bar fly is the amazing breakfast we had a couple of weeks ago and tenderloins next door is the club house for the Bangkok Bangers Rugby team, a team Chris just joined!

During the day soi 33 is a great spot to get cart food, which smells great, fresh fruit and your local iced coffee (if your brave enough to drink their ice-it about kills my stomach so beware!).

Breakfast at Barfly

20130701-141454.jpg

Lady bar by night, amazing American breakfast by morning.

I had read about breakfast at barfly in the Sukhumvit magazine and what they had to offer looked amazing. I had remember seeing the bar as I walk down Soi 33, a soi known for its lady bars where you can buy a lovely lady that works at the bar a drink and negotiate a price for further entertainment as the night goes on. I was a little put off thinking about having breakfast there but at the same time the picture of the Eggs Benedict in the magazine was calling my name.

Thursday Market on Soi 23

On Thursday mornings, we were attending swim class but now that we have changed our swim class to the weekend I have the opportunity to go to the Thursday Morning Market.  I have had so many people tell me about it but after swim class Killian is wiped out and I would normally take him back for a nap but no more!

Where’s your American? By: Chris

To my surprise, this happened twice in Paris. Someone came up to us, then in full speed French, asked me for directions. So this brings me to my point. When we travel, we are always so afraid to look like tourists. As if they don’t belong or like everyone is not a tourist at some point. So what made me so camouflaged? I’d like to thank my tailor, for shirts that actually fit. Unlike in America, people in other parts of the world like to wear garments which aren’t part tent. Thank you Louis for the jacket, which seems to be the common style in Paris or really thanks to whoever left it at your house. Finally, thank you Marie Therese, because of you I knew they were asking for directions and can somewhat navigate France with confidence. In truth, I’m most commonly taken for an Australian, both in Thailand and again this morning in Nice, France. We just tell them we are southern, so that’s why we are nice. Btw: it’s always the Aussies who help us carry the stroller up the stairs in Bangkok.

Hiccups

yummmmm

And no I don’t mean the good kind that are a direct result of the French wine I will be having in less than 2 days. Our preparation for this trip has been a complete comedy of errors from the start. I thought I would share this mess with you so that you might shake your head and smile but really it’s more for my mental health… I need to vent!

Asiatique Trip

Last night the boys and I decided we would head to Asiatique on the river. If you have ever been to the States, it is very similar to Broadway on the Beach or Barefoot Landing in Myrtle Beach, SC. They have transformed the once (a long time ago) main pier used for international trade along the Chao Phraya River into a beautiful shopping and dining experience. Asiatique The Riverfront is an evening market that is open from 5-12pm and is home to 1,500 shops and 40 restaurants. In addition to the shopping and restaurants, they host the Joe Louis Puppet Theater, which is a traditional Thai puppet show, and Calypso, a cabaret lady boy show. We did not attend either of the shows this go around but I would love to see both of these performances on the next trip over.
